Fantasy Games & Entertainment

<< UNDER CONSTRUCTION >>
Sometimes you just look around at the shit-show we call life and think to yourself “man, I could really use an escape from all this.”
So this article is about my all-time favorite, fantasy type games and fantasy entertainment. I am specifically into fantasy worlds & vibes along the lines of Dungeons & Dragons. Gritty, medieval fantasy worlds with diverse races and characters and a magical pulse that hums through the universe. Places where a shadow in the sky either means run! or prepare to fight…
Because of this, the games and entertainment I am listing must meet certain criteria to be included here.
The recommendations here are mainly about “vibes” like, “where do I want to be?” when I escape into a Fantasy World.

The Rules
(Games that meet the following criteria.)
- Fantasy: Generally games that have both “Dungeons” and “Dragons”. (Or beasts that feel as imposing)
- Worlds must contain some type of “Magic”.
- A grounded, gritty, dark or medieval art style that feels tangible and lived in.
- Dynamic game pacing that can swing from mellow to dramatic.
None of the Following
- No online games or MMORPGs (An isolated world you can get lost in)
- No anime or Final Fantasy type games. (Persona, Metaphor: ReFantazio:, Breath of the Wild)
- No modern or futuristic games. (Cyberpunk 2077, Deus Ex, Shadowrun)
- No post apocalyptic games. (Fallout, New Vegas, Horizon Zero Dawn, Wasteland)
- No space games. (Outer Worlds, Mass Effect, Starfield)
- No historical games. (Ghost of Tsushima, Assassins Creed Origins / Odyssey, Kingdom Come Deliverance)
- No hack n’ slash games (Path of Exile, Diablo 4)
IMMERSIVE 3D & FIRST PERSON FANTASY GAMES

(Modern games with a high level of graphic fidelity you can get totally lost in.)
Sorting games from some of my absolute favorites to ones that are still good, just not mind blowing. Some of these games don’t strictly follow the rules above; The Souls games don’t typically have “mellow” pacing. (Think fishing, or exploring a town market.) but they are so immersive I feel they need to be included in their own section.

The Elder Scrolls III: Morrowind Xbox Trailer
Morrowind is old enough that it’s hard to find a watchable original trailer. But there is one in the drop down box above if you would like to compare it to the modded version of the game.
Enderal: Forgotten Stories
Pillars of Eternity
Dragon’s Dogma 2
Lords of the Fallen 2
Avowed
I’m not sure what beef people had with this game. I think people expected it to be a 10/10 or 9/10 and it’s more like a 7/10 but based of the immersion and experience it offers I think that’s just fine for me.
Pathfinder: Wrath of Righteous
Solasta: Crown of the Magister
Dragon’s Dogma: Dark Arisen
Sword Coast Legends
Unfortunately I don’t think this game is really available anywhere anymore. I don’t know if there were any physical copies and digital copies got pulled from storefronts over licensing agreements with the developer. I was lucky enough to pick it up on PS4 but really wish I had a copy on Steam. I believe it go middling reviews but I thoroughly enjoyed it!
Pathfinder: Kingmaker
I actually really enjoyed this game BUT there’s a catch. I have taken a long break after being about 40 hours into it because there is a time mechanic that forces you to deal with an event. I have been exploring the world and was unaware that dealing with the event was mission critical so I find myself in a spot where I am unprepared to deal with it, but basically can’t proceed until I do. I was so annoyed I decided to take a breather. It’s a great game, with challenging gameplay and wonderful mechanics but please, please, PLEASE… stop putting timers on games that offer exploration of massive & beautiful worlds.
Divinity Original Sin
Souls Games

I feel like Souls games and Souls-“like” games deserve their own category. These are not true RPGs in the vein of Baldur’s Gate or Elder Scrolls where you can at times just calmly wander the world. They are darker, more sinister worlds but they are such AMAZING worlds they deserve a place on this list.
While there is less dialog interaction with NPCs and the vibe and pace usually remains more frantic the worlds themselves are wholly worth exploring. All the small details, secrets and Easter eggs in these games create there own style of exploration and become even more engrossing as you begin to unravel all the little bits of lore hidden in these worlds.
I arrived late the party with Souls games, intimidated by the perceived difficulty but once I game them a chance I was pulled in hard by the dynamics of these games. If you haven’t played them but have always been curious they are well worth your time.
